It goes without saying, choosing wedding flowers is not something many people have a lot of experience with. Almost without exception brides and grooms are surprised at the number of decisions to make when selecting their floral decorations. So, a few points you might like to give some thought: –
What flowers do you need?
Consider a bridal bouquet, bridesmaid’s bouquets, boutonnieres for the groom, and groomsmen. There is often also boutonnieres for the Dads’, corsages for the Mums, hair pieces or floral crowns, decoration for an arch, the aisle, signing table, bridal table, guest tables, cake or wishing well details, flower girls, page boys, petals, chair decorations, hanging installations…..
Are there any flowers that are special to you?
This might be a flower that was in your Mum’s bouquet, is local to where you grew up, marks a special memory in your relationship, or is your favourite just because…
Don’t know a hydrangea from a hibiscus? Don’t worry, a qualified florist will be able to help you work through your floral options. Collecting pictures of bouquets or floral arrangements that have caught your eye can also be really useful.
When is the wedding?
While growers are amazing at extending seasons on popular flowers generally most do have a time frame where they are at their absolute best and priced well. Information can be found at “Flowers by Season”, in wedding magazines and online.
What ‘feeling’ do you want to create at your wedding?
This may mean defining a wedding ‘theme’, or creating a wedding that is a reflection of yourselves as a couple, expressing how you want to spend your special day.
Where is your wedding?
Consider the style of your ceremony and reception venues; think about where your flowers will have maximum impact.
What is your budget?
It really is helpful to have an idea of your budget early on. There are amazing creative options for all budgets and knowing your budget can help avoid disappointment.
Finishes?
How would you like your items to look? What type of vase/ jar/milk bottle/ vintage box would you like the table arrangement in? How would you like the bouquets and boutonnieres finished – ribbon, string, braid, tape, lace? Would your like bows on your bouquets, tails on the ribbons, how long? Would you like pearl or diamante pins?
Logistics?
What needs to be where, when? That said, don’t stress, you don’t need to know all the answers. It is amazing how it all comes together with everyone motivated to create your vision for your very special day.
